Great insights Joel. Interesting to think of the interplay between what may be accessible at various seasons in one’s journey as well as how the results of a creative endeavor may tend to form the brain’s tendency to revert to what is safe. Finding, crafting, executing and delivering a project that requires intense creativity, play, situational learning, forces intellectual development, etc. may or may not be economically feasible, and will undoubtedly be exposed to environmental/economic factors that vary from the original underwriting. To navigate a project that is “cutting edge” in any aspect likely means complexities with attracting a new or untapped consumer base, orchestrating entitlement complexities, and depending upon a wide range of creatives and technicians to execute the “placemaking” intangibles that are crucial to the vitality, if not also the viability of the development. I’d love to see some writing on how to maintain that creative executive function - the creative willpower - to sustain a commitment towards situational learning, collaboration, while still being ruthlessly disciplined on ensuring a project’s economic viability, economic sustainability.
